Buddha
Purnima is the greatest festival for followers of Buddhism. According to the Hindu calendar, Buddha Purnima is
celebrated on the full moon of Vesak month. That is why it is also called ' Vesak
Purnima '. This is the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha. It is believed that
the birth of Lord Buddha, the attainment of knowledge and Mahaparinirvana
were on the same day, that is, Vesak Purnima.
Followers
of Buddhism celebrate Buddha Purnima with great fanfare all over the world.
Buddha is considered the ninth incarnation of Hindu God Lord Vishnu. So, for
Hindus also, this day is considered sacred. A variety of celebrations are held
on this day. On the day of Buddha Purnima, lamps are burnt in Buddhist houses
and houses are decorated with flowers. The scriptures of Buddhism are
constantly played. On the day of Buddha Purnima, many works of charity and
dharma-karma are done.
Buddha
Purnima is the holiest festival of Buddhist people. Buddha Purnima is also
known as Buddha Jayanti, Vesak, Vashaka and Buddha’s birthday. Buddha Purnima
is celebrated in remembrance of Lord Buddha. It is celebrated every year on the
full moon night (according to the Hindu calendar, usually in April or May).
At the
same time, other countries like Vishaka, Bua in Thailand, Vaisak in Indonesia
and Vesak in Sri Lanka and Malaysia are called. It is celebrated extensively in
India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The
festival is celebrated throughout South-East Asia, but the way to celebrate it
varies from country to country and region to region.
Lord
Buddha was the founder of Buddhism and is also considered to be the ninth
incarnation of Vishnu. It was the occasion of Buddha Purnima in which three
important events of buddha God's life took place, that is, his birth, his
knowledge and his death (Nirvana). It is believed that Gautam Buddha gained
knowledge and passed away on the same day.
Gautam Buddha's Divine Life Story
Lord
Buddha was born in 563 B.C. as Siddhartha Gautam in the house of King Shuddodhan
of Shakya Kul. He was a real historical man who was the prince of Shakya. The
state is a small area along today's modern India and Nepal.
At the
age of sixteen, Siddhartha married a beautiful woman and had a son. There was a
wonderful twist in his life when Siddhartha was twenty-five years old. He
walked out of the palace for the first time. He saw people fighting the world's
miseries (old age, sickness and death).
He had
abandoned his wife, son and immense wealth for the discovery of knowledge. He
travelled in many places for years and at the age of twenty-five, he arrived at
Bodh Gaya, where he sat under a people's tree. And after forty days of
meditation, he attained nirvana, a state of permanence.
Celebrations and Rituals of Buddha Jayanti or Purnima
The main
festival of Buddha Jayanti is in Bodh Gaya. For the people of Buddhism, Bodh
Gaya is the most important pilgrimage centre related to the life of Gautam
Buddha. The Bodh Gaya Shrine marks the place of Enlightenment of Buddha. Bodh
Gaya is a small town in the district of Bihar in India. Devotees donate to
temples on the day of Buddhist full moon.
Here Buddhist devotees from all over the world gather to pay their esteemed tributes
to Lord Buddha in large numbers. In addition to decorating the temple and surrounding
area with colourful Buddhist flags, Buddhists decorate their home with lights,
candles and lamps.
After the
morning prayer, there are colourful processions of monks, worship with large
offerings, distribution of sweets. On this day you can hear the prayers,
sermons, reverberating of Buddhist texts in the homes, reading monasteries,
religious halls and houses of the Buddhist people.
On this
day Buddhist people bathe and wear only white clothes. People dedicate incense, flowers, candles and
fruits to the idol of Lord Buddha. The Mahabodhi tree, also known as the
"Peeple's Tree" or the holy fig tree, is worshipped and offerings are
made. It is considered to be the tree under which Lord Buddha received
knowledge.
Traditionally,
Buddhists are pure vegetarians. Therefore, all Buddhism people make
pure-vegetarian food in their homes on this holy day. Kheer ( rice dessert) is
mainly prepared on houses. Freeing birds from cages is considered auspicious in
most places on this day. They listen to the interpretation of Buddha's life and
teachings throughout their day.
