educated. They were married in the same way as men and had the freedom to
choose on their own.
Medieval period
The condition of women declined
in the medieval period. The exploitation of women caste started through evils
like child marriage, ban on remarriage, polygamy, Devadasi practice etc.. Women
were imprisoned behind the curtains. Nevertheless, many women fought and found
respect by making distinguished achievements in the field of politics,
literature, education and religion. Women like Razia Sultan, Rani Durgawati,
Shivaji's mother Jijabai gave glory to the female caste.
British Rule
In British Rule, the condition of
women began to improve at a snail's pace. Women had the opportunity to get
education. Raja Rammohan Roy made a big contribution in favour of widow
marriage by the abolition of Sati practice. Rani Lakshmibai fought against the
British and redeemed their power. In the fight for freedom, many women like Dr.
Annie Besant, Vijaylaxmi Pandit, Aruna Asaf Ali, Sucheta Kriplani and Kasturba
Gandhi made significant contributions.
Independent India
In 1950 after independence, when India got the Constitution, women got security, dignity and equal
opportunities and rights but because of
illiteracy and weak social structure, the female caste could not fully benefit from
those opportunities and rights. In her childhood, women depended on the father,
her husband in youth and the son in old age. After entering the husband's
house, her individuality was completely lost.
